Historical background

LOMBARDY - PROVISIONAL GOVERNMENT

(1848)

In Milan, the revolt broke out on March 18, 1848, and on March 22, the Austrians were driven out. On July 24, the Piedmontese troops were beaten by Marshal Radetsky at Custoza and Milan was recaptured on August 6, 1848. The city remained Austrian until the Franco-Austrian war of 1859. Milan and Lombardy were exchanged for Savoy and the county of Nice in 1860.
