Historical background

LORRAINE - CITY OF METZ

1563-1619

Saint Stephen is always represented with one or more stones because he was stoned, becoming the first martyr after Christ. The political situation changed in Metz in the 16th century; freed from the tutelage of the bishop, the city is now administered by the citizens. Henri II seized the Three Bishoprics in 1552, which were confirmed to him by the Peace of Cateau-Cambrésis in 1559, but Metz would not be definitively integrated into the kingdom until after the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Municipal coinage ceased in 1661.
