On the death of Duke Francis I, his successor, Charles III, being only two and a half years old, the regency was entrusted to Christine of Denmark and her great-uncle Nicolas of Lorraine. Christine, close to the Empire, was deposed by the troops of King Henry II of France in 1552, passing through Nancy. The duchy was then entrusted to Nicolas de Lorraine alone..
