Historical background

LORRAINE - DUCHY OF LORRAINE - RAOUL CALLED "THE VALIANT"

(1329-25/08/1346)

Raoul was born in 1320 from the union of Duke Ferry IV and Elisabeth of Austria. When his father died in 1329, he was nineteen years old and was placed under the regency of his mother until 1334. In 1337, an open war broke out with the Count of Bar, Henri IV. The King of France Philippe VI put an end to this conflict. Allied with the King of France, he fought the English by sending troops to the siege of Tournai. He also helped the King of Castile Alphonse XI to fight the Muslims of Granada and distinguished himself, on November 3, 1340, at the Battle of Gibraltar. Back in France, he supported his brother-in-law Charles de Blois during the War of the British Succession. He was killed during the battle of Crécy on August 25, 1346.
