Historical background

DUCHY OF LORRAINE - RENE II

(1473-1508)

René II is the son of Ferri de Vaudémont and Yolande d'Aragon. His two grandfathers are René I of Anjou and Antoine de Vaudémont. He succeeded Nicolas d'Anjou (1470-1473) then had to face the invasion of Lorraine by Charles the Bold in 1475. Finally, the Duke of Burgundy found death under the walls of Nancy. After allying himself with Louis XI, he became angry with the latter about Bar's succession. René reconciled with Maximilian of Austria, son-in-law of the Bold. He married in second marriage Philippa de Guelders, daughter of Adolphe d'Egmont, from whom, in 1489, Antoine was born. He tried in vain to claim the throne of Naples because Charles VIII prevented him from doing so. René II died in 1508.
