Historical background

LORRAINE - DUCHY OF LORRAINE - CHARLES IV

(1625-1675)

Faced with the French occupation of his duchy, Charles IV abdicated at Mirecourt on January 19, 1634 in favor of his brother Nicolas François. In 1659, the Treaty of the Pyrenees provided for the return of Charles IV to his duchy. The negotiations ended in failure because the duke rejected the conditions proposed in this treaty which he considered too leonine. They provided for the abandonment of the duchy of Bar, Stenay, Dun, Jametz, the county of Clermont and freedom of passage for the French royal troops to go to Alsace, Brisbach or Philippsbourg. In 1661, the Treaty of Vincennes made these terms only slightly more palatable, but Charles IV relented. He regained possession of his duchies of Lorraine and Bar, however amputated from Clermontois, Jametz, Dun, Stenay, Sierck, Sarrebourg, Phalsbourg and part of the provostship of Marville. Charles IV also had to pay homage to the King of France for Barrois and accept the destruction of the Nancy fortifications..
