Historical background

LORRAINE - BISHOPRIC OF METZ - JEAN I D'APREMONT (61th bishop)

(1224-6/12/1238)

The episcopate of Jean I of Apremont is inserted between that of Conrad de Scharfeneck (1212-1239) and that of Jacques de Lorraine (1239-1260). At that time, the bishops of Metz had to fight against the temporal power of the Count of Bar and the Duke of Lorraine. Not only was the war expensive while the bourgeois of Metz grew richer, but Jean d'Apremont was driven out by the Messins in 1232. Mathieu II of Lorraine (1220-1251) and Henri II Count of Bar (1214-1239) came to besiege Metz while the bishop withdrew to the Château Saint-Germain.
