Historical background

LUXEMBOURG - SIEGE OF LUXEMBOURG

(October 1794 - June 1795)

The Duchy of Luxembourg had belonged to the Habsburgs since the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713. In 1794, the French armies invaded the United Provinces, but the place of Luxembourg, heroically defended by the garrison of Marshal Bender, held out for eight months of siege. The garrison finally had to submit its surrender in June 1795. By the Treaty of Campoformio of 1797, Austria renounced it and Luxembourg became the Department of Forests. It will be erected into a Grand Duchy in 1815 and offered to the King of the Netherlands William I in compensation for the loss of its territories of Nassau.
