Historical background


LYCIA - MASIKYTES

(2nd - 1st century BC)

Masicytes was the central mountainous region south of Lycia east of Xanthos. Myra was the federal capital of the Lycian league and the main transmitting place for Masicytes. Myra is cited by Strabo among the six important cities of Lycia. The city took its name from the eponymous river Myros and was located at its mouth, by the sea. The city, important from an economic point of view, does not seem to be known monetarily before 168 BC Its coinage lasted until 3rd century AD.
