Historical background

LYDIA - SAÏTTA

(3rd century AD)

Saïtta is associated with the modern Sidas Kale, in the valley of the Hyllus (Ilgi-Chai), a tributary of the Hermus. This river had its source near Mount Temnus after receiving the waters of the Lycus and before flowing into those of the Hermus a few kilometers before Magnesia of Sipylus. The coins of the city indicate two rivers The Hyllos which changed its name under Eumenes II to become the Phrygius and later still the Glaucus. The city had an important coinage between Marc Aurèle and Gallien.
