Historical background

LYONNAIS - ARCHBISHOPRIC OF LYON - ANONYMOUS

(11th century-12th century)

The concession of the coin of Lyon could date from the time of Charles II the Bald. This monetary right was often disputed by the kings of Burgundy in the 10th and 11th centuries, in particular by Henry III of Burgundy. Frederick I Barbarossa (1152-1190) confirmed the concession of the Lyon Mint to Archbishop Humbert on November 18, 1157 (A. Blanchet, Manuel, op. cit., p.369). La Monnaie, after the French annexation of 1312, saw its monetary privileges confirmed in the regulations of 1315. The episcopal workshop disappeared at the end of the 14th century.
