Historical background

MACEDONIA - AUTONOMOUS COINAGE

(196-168 BC)

The situation in Macedonia between 196 and 168 BC is complex. Philip V (221-179 BC) fought the Romans and allied with Hannibal. He was defeated by Titus Quintus Flaminius in 197 BC at the Battle of Cynoscephalus and, the following year, Macedonia lost its dominance over Greece. The last years of his reign, Philippe will try to consolidate his situation and pay the heavy war indemnity. Perseus, who succeeded him in 179 BC, tried to restore Macedonian authority and came into conflict with Rome from 172 BC. J.-C. Perseus was finally defeated in 168 by Paul-Émile at the Battle of Pydna, taken prisoner, and taken to Rome where he participated in the triumph of his conqueror before dying captive in Italy.
