Historical background

MACEDONIA - KINGDOM OF MACEDONIA - AMYNTAS III

(393-370/369 BC)

Amyntas III is a great-grandson of Alexander I of Macedon (495-454 BC). He seized power in 389 BC by overthrowing Pausanias (390-389 BC) the son of Aeropos (396-392 BC). Itself overthrown by the Illyrians in 383 BC, it was restored by the Spartans two years later. It was Alexander II who succeeded him before being assassinated by Ptolemy who became regent for the two other sons of Amyntas, Perdiccas III and Philip II.
