Historical background

MACRIANUS

(09/260- spring 261)

Augustus

Young Macrien is the son of Macrien and the brother of Quietus. After the capture of Valerian I by Shapur (Sapor), Macrian, general of Valerian I, and Ballista, prefect of the Praetorium, decide to save the East to proclaim august the two sons of Macrian - young Macrian and Quietus. Ballista defeats Sapor at Corcycus and forces the king to retreat across the Euphrates. After this victory, the two Macrians march on the West, but they are beaten by Auréolus, Gallien's cavalry master. Macrien and his father are taken prisoner, then executed. In the East, Quietus, left alone and left to himself, becomes easy prey for Odenath, king of Palmyra..
