Exemplaire de qualité exceptionnelle sur un flan large bien centré des deux côtés. Très beau portrait de Magnence. Joli revers de style fin, de haut relief. Magnifique patine verte. Conserve l’intégralité de son brillant de frappe et de son coupant d’origine

Obverse translation : “Imperator Cæsar Magnentius Augustus”, (L'empereur césar Magnence auguste).

Reverse legend : FELICITAS - REI PVBLICE/ -|A// TRP(CROISSANT).
Reverse description : L’empereur debout à gauche, tête nue, vêtu militairement, tenant de la main droite un globe nicéphore et de la main gauche, le labarum chrismé.
Reverse translation : “Felicitas Reipublicæ”, (La Félicité de la république).

Poids léger. Ce n’est que la troisième fois que nous proposons un exemplaire pour la première officine avec marque du croissant !.

Historical background


MAGNENTIUS

(01/18/350-08/10/353)

Magnentius was proclaimed on January 18, 350 thanks to his speed and significant diplomatic activity which allowed him to seize Brittany, Gaul, Italy and part of the Balkans. However, he failed to gain recognition from Constantius II. Magnentius suffered a severe defeat at Mursa in September 351. Forced to retreat, he lost Italy the following year before seeing Gaul invaded by the generals of Constance. Beaten at Mount Seleucus near Gap, he committed suicide in Lyon on August 10, 353.
