Historical background

MALTA - EMMANUEL DE ROHAN

(1775-13/07/1797)

Emmanuel de Rohan, bailiff and general of the galleys of the Order of Malta, was unanimously elected Grand Master of the Order on the death of his predecessor, François Ximenez de Texada (1773-1775). Shortly after his election, he convoked the general chapter which had not met for 155 years. He had the statutes of the Order revised and a work published under the title of "Codice del Sacro Militare Ordine Gerosolimitano", Malta, 1782. Fort Tigné, named after a grand prior of Champagne, was built under Emmanuel de Rohan . In 1792, during the French Revolution, France dismantled the commanderies of the order. Emmanuel de Rohan died on July 13, 1797 and was replaced by Ferdinand de Hompesch (1797-1799).
