Historical background

MANUEL II PALAIOLOGOS

(16-02-1391-1423)

Mauel II was the second son of John V (1341-1391). Associated with the throne from 1373, he succeeded his father when the Turkish danger was most present. He went to the West to find help between 1399 and 1402. The danger was averted by the Mongol invasion in 1402. But the end of his reign was marked by a reduction in Byzantine power. Jean VIII, his son was associated with him from 1421. He abdicated in his favor two years later and entered a monastery. He died on July 21, 1425.
