Le type du revers à la déesse sur les lions est probablement inspiré de monnaies antiques où Atargatis, la Dea Syria, est toujours assise sur un ou des lions.

Historical background

MARIE LESZCZYNSKA

(1725-1768)

Marie Leszczynska is the daughter of Stanislas Leszczynski and Catherine Opalinska; she was born in Breslau in 1703. Her father was elected King of Poland in July 12, 1704 but he was quickly dethroned. In 1718 the Leszczynskis found refuge in France where they lived on a pension granted to them by the Regent. At the instigation of the Duke of Bourbon, the engagement of Louis XV with the Infanta of Spain, celebrated in 1721, was broken. On September 5, 1725, Louis XV married Marie Leszczynska in Fontainebleau. She gave birth to two boys, the Grand Dauphin (1729-1765) and the Duke of Anjou (1730-1733), as well as eight girls. She died on June 24, 1768.
