Historical background

MOROCCO - FRENCH PROTECTORATE - MOHAMMED V

1909-1956(-1961)

Sidi Mohammed is the youngest of the four sons of Moulay Youssef, sultan of Morocco from 1912 to 1927 under the French protectorate. In 1927, he succeeded his father as Sultan of Morocco. Very early on, he became close to the nationalist movement and in 1947 claimed independence from the French colonial power. In 1953, he was deposed by the Resident General of France in Morocco for the benefit of Thami El Glaoui, Pasha of Marrakech. He was arrested and deported to Corsica then to Madagascar. Faced with the troubles affecting Morocco and Algeria, France authorized the return of the sultan accompanied by his son Prince Moulay El Hassan on November 16, 1956. The French and Spanish protectorates ended on March 2 and April 7, 1956 respectively. August 14, 1957, he takes the title of King of Morocco.
