Obverse description : Buste à droite, tête avec un diadème terminé par une croisette, une autre croisette devant le visage.
Reverse
Reverse description : Monogramme cruciforme formé des lettres [NF]DS, dans un grènetis.
Commentary
Le monogramme du revers est incomplet ; seules les deux dernières lettres (D et S) ne sont pas hors flan. Les quatre lettres NFDS sont pour le patrice Nimfidius.
Pour Jean Lafaurie, la fabrication des monnaies d'argent commence vers 675, date de l'assassinat de Childéric II. Ces fabrications continuent jusqu'à l'avènement de Pépin le Bref en 751. La plupart de ces monnaies nous sont connues grâce à l'inventaire de Morel-Fatio du Trésor de Nice-Cimiez et à la publication de Chabouillet en 1890. Le trésor qui fut découvert en 1851 contenait 2.294 deniers d'argent dont 1.500 pièces de Marseille d'après Grierson. Le trésor aurait été enfoui entre 730 et 740.

MEROVINGIAN COINAGE - MARSEILLE (MASSILIA)
(7th - 8th century)
Childeric II abolishes the minting of gold in Gaul in favor of silver coinage. The Marseilles mint struck silver coins after the assassination of Childeric II in 675 and probably until the beginning of the reign of Pepin the Short. The workshop had an important production of which the only treasure of Nice-Cimiez delivered a great variety of types. Five patricians succeeded one another at the head of the city, Ansedertus, Nemfidius, Antenor, Metranus and Abbo. In 736, Provence was attached to the kingdom of France and Charles Martel put an end to the patriciate. No copper production in Marseilles seems attested. For lack of text, the dates of these patrices are not known.
