MAURETANIA - IOL (CAESAREA)

(3rd - 2nd century BC)

The city was founded by the Phoenicians or the Carthaginians. Its name comes from the hero Iolaüs, nephew and guide of Hercules. The city was one of the two capitals of Bocchus. Iol before becoming the capital of the kingdom of Mauretania in the 1st century BC under Juba II - Caesarea or modern Cherchell - the city was part of independent Numidia. Iol was the main workshop in the region.
