Denier bien identifiable mais de frappe molle, surtout au droit. Patine poreuse avec des zones plus sombres au revers

Obverse description : Tête diadémée à droite, la chevelure en chignon ; le cou est orné d'un collier de perles ; couronne de feuillage devant le visage.

Reverse legend : ROVECA.
Reverse description : Cheval à droite,une treille de vigne à la place du cavalier ; légende dans une sorte de cartouche à l’exergue.

Commentary


Rare denier pour cette série trimétallique ROVECA. Cette variante correspond à la classe II de Simone Scheers, puis à la Var. 3a du Nouvel Atlas. Le droit est intégré dans une couronne de feuillage dont on distingue une partie devant le visage.
Notons que si ce type est rare dans les collection privées comme publiques, trois exemplaires sont conservés au British Museum (n° 212-214).
Le musée de Dijon conserve un bel exemplaire découvert à Burcy (Seine-et-Marne) acquis en 2002 (cf. n° 54 du catalogue).

GALLIA BELGICA - MELDI (Area of Meaux)

(1st century BC)

The Meldes are mentioned only once in Caesar's work. This small people lived between the Seine and the Marne in the plain of Brie with Meaux as its capital. The Meldes emancipated themselves late from the tutelage of the Suessions and the Remes at the time of the Gallic Wars. Having become independent in 57 BC, the Meldes chose to ally with the Romans. Caesar had sixty ships built by the Meldes, in 55 BC, for the expedition to Brittany. Caesar (BG. V, 5).
