Historical background

MEMMIA

(87 BC)

Lucius and Caius Memmius

Lucius Memmius Galeria belonged to the Marianist party and was a great orator. He is certainly the father of Lucius and Caius. Lucius, the eldest brother, brother-in-law of Pompey, was legate propraetor in Sicily with Pompey, then accompanied him as quaestor in Spain during the war with Sertorius. He died fighting Sertorius, near Sagunto in 76 BC. His brother Caius should not be confused with Caius Memmius Gemellus who was praetor in 58 BC..
