Historical background

MEXICO - CHARLES IV

(14/12/1788-10/05/1808)

Charles IV (12/11/1748-19/01/1819) is the second son of Charles III and Marie-Amélie de Saxe. He married Marie-Louise de Parme (1751 -1819) in 1765. The royal family of Spain at the time was immortalized by Goya. He succeeded his father in 1788. It was Godoy, his favorite who in fact governed Spain with his wife. Returning to French orbit after 1795, he allied himself with Napoleon I and was defeated at Trafalgar. After the uprising of Aranjuez (March 1808), he abdicated in favor of his eldest son, Ferdinand VII, retracted, then entrusted his kingdom to Napoleon who installed his brother, Joseph Bonaparte there. Charles IV lived in exile in Compiègne, in Marseilles, then finally in Naples with his brother Ferdinand IV, king of the Two Sicilies where he died in 1819.
