Historical background

MEXICO - MAXIMILIAN I

(1864-1867)

Born in Vienna in 1832, Maximilien is the brother of Emperor François-Joseph, Archduke of Austria. Napoleon III, who wished to get closer to Austria, offered Maximilian the imperial crown of Mexico (July 10, 1863). The majority of Mexicans, attached to Juarez, refuse it and Maximilian can only maintain himself with the support of Napoleon III. Soon abandoned by Napoleon III, he fell into the hands of Juarez, was condemned to death and shot with his generals..
