Historical background

MEXICO - FILIP V OF SPAIN

(1700-1746)

Philippe, Duke of Anjou (1683-1746) was the grandson of Louis XIV. On the death of Charles II of Spain in 1700, he was designated as king by will. He took thirteen years to conquer his kingdom, having as a competitor Charles III of Habsburg (future Charles VI of Austria). He is the ancestor of the Bourbons of Spain who still reign today. By becoming king of Spain and the Indies, he had renounced all claim to the throne of France..
