Obverse description : Buste du Christ de face, la tête coiffée d’un nimbe crucigère, vêtu du pallium et du colombium, bénissant de la main droite et tenant les Évangiles de la main gauche ; double grènetis.
Obverse translation : (Jésus-Christ).

Reverse legend : + MIX-AHA - RACIA O.
Reverse description : Buste de Michel VII de face barbu, couronné avec les pendilia, vêtu du loros, tenant de la main droite le labarum bouleté et de la gauche un globe crucigère ; double grènetis.
Reverse translation : (Michel roi).

Commentary


Or pâle (électrum). Flan scyphate (concave). Au droit, le nimbe crucigère est orné dans chaque bras d’un globule. Sur les Évangiles, trois points posés en triangle. Au revers, sept perles dans le diadème couronné, sept perles autour du cou. Loros richement décoré et gemmé. Labarum bouleté orné de cinq globules posés en carré centré.

MICHAEL VII DUKAS

(24/10/1071-24/03/1078)

Michael succeeded Roman IV when the latter, liberated by the Turks and returning to Constantinople, was blinded and died of his wound. Part of Asia Minor was lost, Sicily was invaded by the Normans and a sedition broke out in the Balkans. Michael was overthrown by a plot in 1078. Deposed, he retired to a monastery.
