Historical background

MICHAEL VIII PALAIOLOGOS

(15/081261 - 11/12/1282)

Michael was first regent for John IV at Nicaea in 1258 before being crowned co-emperor. On July 25, 1261, Constantinople was recaptured by the Byzantines and Baldwin II had to flee. Michel made a triumphal entry into the reconquered city and was enthroned at Sainte-Sophie. After twenty years of reign, Michael VIII was overthrown by a palace plot in April 1282 and died soon after. His son Andronicus II succeeded him.
