Historical background

MONACO - PRINCIPALITY OF MONACO - HONORE II GRIMALDI

(1604-1662)

Honoré II, who became prince in 1604, reigned over the principality for 58 years. He was first lord of Monaco between 1605 and 1633, then prince. Until 1641, Monaco was under Spanish protectorate. On this date, the principality returned to French orbit. Honoré was allowed to circulate his coins in France provided that they respected the conditions of the kingdom. The minting of crowns began in 1648. The first type was minted between 1648 and 1651, the second type in 1652 and 1653.
