Historical background

MURBACH AND LURE - COLOMBAN D'ANDLAU-WITTENHEIM

(1663-1664)

After the death of Archduke Léopold Guillaume in November 1662, the chapter hastened to organize the election of the new prince-abbot. Three candidates entered into smooth and the chapter elected a monk of Saint-Gall of 35 years, Colomban of Andlau-Wittenheim which resided in its principality with the castle of Neuenbourg in Guebwiller. His election raised a number of protests from the French and the Austrians. Colomban gave in and ended up resigning around the middle of 1664 and retired to Hésingue, near Basel. François Égon de Fürstenberg-Heilingenberg, supported by the French, replaced him in 1665.
