Obverse description : Écu sous une mitre reposant sur deux crosses posées en sautoir.
Obverse translation : (Jean-Ulrich, par la grâce de Dieu, abbé de Murbach et Lure).

Reverse legend : MAXIMILIANI+ II+ IMP+ AVG+ P+ F+ DECRET.
Reverse description : Aigle impériale bicéphale couronnée portant en cœur un globe crucigère contenant la marque de valeur 60. Le millésime 1573 de part et d’autre des cous de l’aigle.

Commentary


Ces thalers ont été frappés dans l’atelier de Saint-Amarin, ouvert en 1544 et qui frappa monnaies jusque vers 1581. C’est la première et seule fois que le millésime apparaît autour des cous de l’aigle bicéphale.

MURBACH AND LURE - JOHANN-ULRICH OF RAITENEAU

(1570-02/01/1587)

Jean-Lurich de Raiteneau was appointed coadjutor at the end of the reign of Jean-Rodlophe Stoer de Stoerenbourg. An actor in the Counter-Reformation, he tried to re-establish the Benedictine rule in Murbach. After having his nephew Wolfgang Dietrich of Raitenau appointed as coadjutor, he died on February 1, 1587.
