Historical background

MYSIA - PERGAMENE KINGDOM - ATTALOS I SOTER

(241-197 BC)

Coinage in the name of Philtaire

Philetario, a eunuch, was first the guardian of the treasure of Lysimachus in Pergamum, a treasure of more than 9,000 talents, or more than 54 million drachmas. He betrayed his master for Seleucus I and became independent in 282 BC. Attalus was Philetario's little cousin or nephew. He successfully fought the Galatians and Antiochus Hierax. Faithful ally of the Romans who helped him against the expansionist aims of Philip V of Macedonia, he died at the start of the conflict opposing him to Antiochus III the Great (223-187 AC.).
