Historical background

NIVERNAIS - COUNTY OF NEVERS - ROBERT DE DAMPIERRE

(1271-1296)

The count of Nevers, Jean Tristan, died of the plague in front of Tunis on August 3, 1270 without leaving any children. His widow Yolande remarried in March 1271 to Robert de Dampierre, known as "de Béthune". Yolande died in 1280 and Robert administered the county of Nevers for his minor son Louis I of Flanders (1296-1321) who was the last count of Nevers to mint coins. In 1305, after the death of his father, Robert de Dampierre became count of Flanders. Louis II de Nevers and Louis de Male minted coins only in their counties of Flanders and Rethel. Jean II le Bon bought the right to mint the county of Nevers in 1355 for 1,300 gold crowns.
