Historical background

PARTHIA - PARTHIAN KINGDOM - GOTARZES I

(91-87 BC)

For David Sellwood, the reign of this king is at the time of Mithradates II and he seems to have been a direct descendant of Arsaces. He would have revolted against the authority of Mithridates II between 95 and 90 BC according to the authors. Gotarzes I would have been the victim of the attack of Tigranes II, king of Armenia (97-56 BC), an ally of Mithradates II who then seized part of Media. In fact, the history of this king is very poorly known. He could have remained on the Parthian throne until the 80s BC. In reality, Gotarzes I would have been eliminated by Orodes I.
