Historical background

PARTHIA - PARTHIAN KINGDOM - PHRAATES II

(138-127 BC)

Minor, Phraates II, succeeded his father Mithridates I (171-138 BC). His mother ensured the regency at the beginning of his reign. He had to fight the Seleucid king, Antiochus VII Sidetes (138-129 BC) who had invaded Babylonia and Media. The Seleucid king, initially victorious, was defeated and killed (or committed suicide) fighting against the Parthians. Phraates had to face many incursions, the Scythians first, then the Saces at the end of his reign. It was while fighting them that he died in 127 BC..
