Historical background

BURGUNDIAN NETHERLANDS - DUCHY OF BRABANT - CHARLES THE BOLD

(06/15/1467-01/5/1477)

Charles (1433-1477), son of Philippe le Bon and Isabella of Portugal, first married Catherine of France (1428-1446) in 1440, then Isabella of Bourbon in 1454, finally Margaret of York, sister of Edward IV, in 1468. He succeeded his father on June 15, 1467. Charles sequestrated Louis XI at the interview in Péronne and accused him of treason. The king submits. Charles helps his brother-in-law Édouard to reconquer his kingdom in 1471. He besieges Beauvais in July 1472 (heroic resistance from Jeanne Hachette), but has to lift the siege. He then tries to recreate a kingdom of Lotharingia with the help of Emperor Frederick III. It's a fail. Charles unsuccessfully besieged Cologne in 1475, then threw himself on the Lorraine of René II and took Nancy on September 30. Defeated by the Swiss on June 21, 1476 at Morat, Charles was killed besieging Nancy again on January 5, 1477. His daughter Marie, born in 1457, succeeded him..
