In July 1581, the deputies of all the provinces of the Netherlands declared Philip II deposed. The Union of Utrecht also included many Flemish cities such as Antwerp, Bruges, Ypres, Ghent and Tournai. The United Provinces were a confederation in which each province retained a large degree of autonomy. In 1588, they established themselves as a republic under the leadership of Oldenbarnevelt.
