Commentary


Abel Bergasse Dupetit-Thouars, contre-amiral, est chargé en 1880 de pacifier les îles Marquises. Il se trouve lors de son voyage de retour à Lima, au Pérou, au moment où les troupes chiliennes vont s'emparer de la ville (Guerre du Pacifique (1879-1884)). Par son attitude ferme et décidée, il empêche les excès et sauve cette capitale d'une destruction sanglante
L'Avenida (du) Petit Thouars, une avenue importante de Lima porte aujourd'hui son nom. Parallèle à l'avenue Arequipa, elle traverse les districts de San Isidro, Miraflores, Lince et Cercado de Lima..

Peru gained its independence on July 28, 1821, thanks to General San Martin. Bolivar ensured the integrity of Peru by eliminating the last Spanish troops in 1824 but Spain did not recognize Peru's independence until 1879.
