Nasir ed-Din Shah, of the Qajar dynasty was an enlightened monarch. He ushered Persia into the modern era. He relied in turn on the Russians and the English, according to his interests. He could not seize Afghanistan in 1857. He founded many schools, and sent many Persians to study in France. He ends up being murdered.
