Historical background

PHOENICIA - SIDON

(4th century BC)

bodashtart

Sidon was with Tire one of the main ports of the Phoenician coast, essentially a military port, hence the presence of the galley under the local coins. On the reverse, the triumphal chariot could represent a procession with the Achaemenid king, Artaxerxes I (464-423) or Darius II (423-404). The new coinage of Sidon began in 112-111 BC Pompey maintained the status of a free city, later confirmed by Marc-Antoine. Autonomous coinage ceased in 30/29 BC.
