Historical background

PHILIPPINES - ISABELLA II OF SPAIN

(29/09/1833-09/1868)

Isabella II (18/10/1830-9/04/1904) is actually called Marie-Louise and is the daughter of Ferdinand VII (1784-1830) and Marie Christine of Sicily (1806-1878). She became queen in 1833 on the death of her father under the regency of her mother, which triggered the Carlist Wars. Married to her cousin François, Duke of Cadiz (1822-1902), she governed alone only from 1854. She was driven from the throne in 1868 and the first Republic was proclaimed. Her son Alphonse XII (1857-1885) became king in 1874. She died in 1904 in Paris.
