Historical background

PHLIASIA - PHLIUS

(5th - 3rd century BC)

Phlious was the main city of the Pliasia region located in the northeast of the Peloponnese above the Nemea valley. It was surrounded by Argolis, Achaia, Arcadia, Sicyon and Corinth. Phlious would have been called Arantia before taking the name of Phlious, name of the grandson of Téménos. The city was an ally of Sparta and participated in the Persian Wars by providing contingents at Thermopylae in 480 BC with Leonidas and the following year at Plataea. In the Peloponnesian War, she opposed Athens. The city went into decline in the 4th century BC..
