Historical background

PICARDY - SOISSONS - ABBEY OF SAINT-MEDARD

(extreme end of the 10th century)

Eudes I of Blois, son of Thibaud I the Cheat (died in 975), received the Saint-Médard de Soissons abbey. He died on March 12, 996 leaving a widow who married King Robert II. He had coins minted in his name at Soissons, probably at the same time or shortly before those bearing the name of the abbeys of Saint-Médard and Saint-Sébastien; the spelling of the letters makes it possible to affirm that they are the work of the same engraver.
