Historical background

POITOU - COUNTY OF POITOU - COINAGE IMMOBILIZED IN THE NAME OF CHARLES II THE BALD

(10th-12th centuries)

From 877, the Melle mint continued to mint denarii and obols in the name of the late King Charles II, known as "the Bald". Melle was an active workshop until the middle of the 12th century, a period around which all activity ceased, certainly due to a shortage of wood essential for the extraction of the ore and the smelting operations..
