Commentary


Ce denier est très rare, puisque ceux avec ANE ou AVE au revers portent généralement au droit un ME sous une croix et non les lettres MN. Ce type monétaire se rencontrant souvent en Poitou-Charentes, le ME sous la croisette fait naturellement penser à METVLLO (Melle) où étaient exploitées des mines de plomb argentifère.

The Melle workshop, in the south-east of Deux-Sèvres, was important in the Carolingian period and seems to have been in operation from the Merovingian period. The silver-lead mines are still accessible and can be visited by a wide public.
