Commentary


Avec un tel poids, ce genre de monnaie correspond plus à une obole qu’à un denier. Pour le denier B. 5716, A. de Belfort propose une dégénérescence d'un animal pour le motif indéterminé du droit. Il serait aussi possible d’y voir un monogramme composé des lettres J et F.

The Melle workshop, in the south-east of Deux-Sèvres, was important in the Carolingian period and seems to have been in operation from the Merovingian period. The silver-lead mines are still accessible and can be visited by a wide public.
