Historical background

POLAND - INDEPENDENT REPUBLIC

(1919-1939)

Poland is recognized as a sovereign state by the Treaty of Versailles of June 28, 1919. It obtains access to the sea with the "Dantzig Corridor" and most of East Prussia as well as other territories that go through the subsequently pose many boundary problems. The head of state was General Pilsudski until 1926, when he had his friend Moscicki elected as president. The reality of power, however, was held by Pilsudski until his death in 1935. Poland signed various alliances with France in 1921 or the USSR in 1932. It signed a new one with England on April 6, 1939 after the entry into Prague of the Germans. At dawn on September 1, 1939, without a declaration of war, the German army invaded Poland.
