Historical background

PONTUS - AMASEIA

(2nd - 1st century BC)

Amasia belonged to the kings of Pontus. It was also their capital until the capture of Sinope in 183 BC. It was one of the important cities of the Pontian coalition of Mithridates VI of Pontus (120-63 BC) . Lucullus seized the city in 70 BC During the reorganization of Asia Minor by Pompey in 64 BC, Amasia was certainly one of the eleven cities of Pontus. The city followed the fate of Pontus, which became a Roman province before the end of the 1st century BC..
