Historical background

PONTUS - GAZIURA

(1st century BC)

The city of Gazioura was located near Comana on the banks of the Iris River. Heavily fortified, it served as a palace and residence successively for the Persian satraps and then for the kings of Pontus. Gazioura was part of the possessions of Ariarathes, satrap of Cappadocia. Gazioura was the site of a battle in 67 BC between Mithirdates VI du Pontus and the Romans. The king defeated the Roman troops which led to the appointment of Pompey to fight him.
