PORTUGAL - KINGDOM OF PORTUGAL - JOHN PRINCE REGENT

(1799-1816)

Second son of Queen Maria I and King Consort Peter III of Portugal, John VI (1767-1826) became heir to the throne on the death of his older brother Joseph in 1788. He assumed the regency of the Kingdom of Portugal and its colonies between 1799 and 1816 when his mother Marie I sank into dementia.
